Summary
The DI4D ICP Connect project transforms the unique and innovative Digital Innovation (DI) programme at Thomas More into an inclusive, globally oriented Digital Innovation for Development programme (DI4D). Central to DI4D’s methodology are problem-based learning (PBL) and work-integrated learning (WIL), approaches that integrate real-world challenges from local communities directly into the curriculum. This transformation aims to address the digital divide and gender disparities, closely aligning with SDGs 4 (Education), 5 (Gender), 8 (Employability), 9 (Innovation & Infrastructure), and 17 (Partnerships), focusing on inclusivity in STEM fields for underrepresented groups, especially women.
DI4D demonstrates a desire and ability to work with and serve the LMIC/global community in the following countries: Cuba, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The project operates through a collaborative framework engaging diverse stakeholders following the Quadruple Helix approach, including academia (9 partner HEIs in the South), governmental entities, the private sector (Johnson &Johnson, Close the Gap, etc.), and local communities, to enhance digital literacy, STEM education, and innovation in the Global South.
Pursuing capacity building through knowledge sharing and joint commitment, the DI4D project encompasses various activities. These include Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) and train-the-trainer workshops, alongside curriculum delocalisation, internships, DI4D projects, initiatives for female STEM education, and the establishment of alumni communities among other endeavours.
In essence, DI4D seeks to leverage digital technologies as catalysts for sustainable development, aiming for a transformative impact on education, gender equality, and economic development in the Global South, while fostering a global community of digital innovators committed to societal advancement.
