General objective

This five-year programme aims to contribute to reducing the burden and impact of malaria and food- and waterborne parasitic diseases in Vietnam, through infectious disease research, surveillance and control strategies.

Summary

The programme enables NIMPE to become a sustainable driver of change by collaborating on research methodology and laboratory capacity, and diagnostic and surveillance strategies for parasitic diseases. The establishment of a malaria molecular surveillance platform will allow translation of molecular surveillance results and development of prediction tools to facilitate interpretation and inform policy and malaria control strategies.

NIMPE is both the implementing body of – and technical advisor for parasitic control in Vietnam. The programme will result in high quality evidence that can therefore directly contribute to policy for prevention, control and elimination of parasitic diseases. With the resulting changes in policy, we will contribute to the reduction of malaria cases, especially in ethnic minority populations, the containment of antimalarial resistance and development of tailored strategies to, ultimately, eliminate both P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria in Vietnam.

In addition, the programme aims to reduce the impact of food- and waterborne parasitic diseases in Vietnam, in particular (re)emerging zoonotic infections such as fasciola and cysticercosis. The aim is to better map parasitic diseases, develop treatment, diagnosis and prevention guidelines to better support training of local health staff and develop provincial master plans for control and prevention of parasitic diseases.
