Summary

This project aims to optimize antimicrobial use among vulnerable populations in the war-affected northern part of Ethiopia, including women, children, the elderly, and displaced persons. By promoting responsible antimicrobial use and strengthening antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) among healthcare providers, the project seeks to improve health outcomes, reduce resistant pathogens, lower healthcare costs, and increase productivity. It is a collaboration between KU Leuven, Mekelle University, and other stakeholders, directly supporting SDG 3 and indirectly contributing to SDGs 1, 2, 8, 12, 13, and 17.
The project will co-develop a context-based AMS intervention model, including AMS training materials, while emphasizing gender inclusion. It aligns with a Global Minds PhD program, an ITM project in Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian national action plan to tackle AMR. Key stakeholders, including patients, healthcare providers, the Ministry of Health, and Addis Pharmaceutical Factory PLC, will be engaged throughout the project, ensuring the provision of feedback and expertise, and dissemination.
