Summary

This project aims to improve the livability of Ecuadorian urban environments for children, taking into account gender and socio-economic differences. It utilises an evidence-based, participatory approach to establish a model for healthy, safe, and inclusive neighbourhoods in Cuenca, Ecuador, with potential applications in other regional cities and countries. The initiative is spearheaded by a multi-stakeholder partnership comprising Flemish and Ecuadorian academia, civil society, and local government. The project’s comprehensive approach includes conducting interdisciplinary and participatory research to identify factors that influence children’s livability, using this research as a basis for public policy on inclusive urban design, enhancing and broadening curricula in relevant undergraduate and graduate programs, professional training, and strengthening partnerships to facilitate knowledge uptake.
