Summary

This project enhances maternal and neonatal health in Tigray, Ethiopia, by addressing maternal malnutrition through the use of a locally available, nutrient-dense flour mix, regionally called ‘Mitin.’ It integrates community-driven nutrition interventions with capacity building for healthcare workers, tackling challenges exacerbated by poverty, sociocultural barriers, and post-conflict food insecurity. A digital platform and training manual will equip university staff, hospital professionals, and regional healthcare workers with essential maternal nutrition knowledge.
Community-based interventions, including breastfeeding counseling and practical demonstrations, will further support maternal health and are expected to raise awareness among the population. By engaging students and recent graduates in developing, implementing, and evaluating the intervention, the project strengthens the link between education and practice. Aligning with SDGs 2, 3 and 5, it fosters local ownership and promotes sustainable improvements in maternal and neonatal health.
