Summary

This project establishes a state-of-the-art computational laboratory for advanced materials science and engineering at Mekelle University, addressing critical infrastructure gaps and enhancing the university’s capacity for cutting-edge research and education. In partnership with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the laboratory will equip faculty and students with essential computational tools for simulating and modeling materials, enabling high-level research that aligns with regional industrial needs. VUB-led training programs will cultivate expertise at Mekelle University, laying a foundation for sustainable materials research. This initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by enhancing educational resources and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by fostering innovation. The project embraces the LNOB principle by ensuring equitable access for all students and faculty and promotes multi-stakeholder partnerships to integrate research findings into Ethiopia’s industry, education, and environmental frameworks, contributing to long-term national development goals.
