Summary

Indonesia is the world’s second largest vanilla producer. In the last decade, however, national production declined by 50% due to agronomic challenges and market instability. Moreover, changing climate conditions are affecting yield and quality. To improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and strengthen their position in global value chains, there is a need to enhance the resilience of the vanilla sector. To date, little research exists on vanilla cultivation in Indonesia. Partnering with Universitas Brawijaya and Rikolto, this project aims to assess the resilience of existing vanilla farming systems in Malang and Ende, two major cultivation areas. The obtained insights will inform an action plan that fosters the transition towards climate smart vanilla production, which will be piloted on demonstration plots that serve as education and knowledge exchange centres for farmers, researchers and students.
