General objective

Contribute to improving health for all by generating data to inform disease control and conducting high quality research in the areas of malaria, antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use, and sexual and reproductive health.

Summary

This programme aims to further develop laboratory and bioinformatics capacity (technology and skills) for disease surveillance. Research capacities are strengthened by conducting pilot studies in the intervention areas related to malaria, antimicrobial resistance and sexual and reproductive health, with social science as transversal axis to ensure impact to local communities. All research activities are intimately connected to education and training: staff and students are embedded in research projects to foster learning-by-doing, while formal training is organised in different formats (short-term training, master and PhD programmes). Relevant stakeholders are informed on a regular basis about the research results, thereby contributing to improved case management guidelines and disease control interventions.
