Summary

Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in the Peruvian Amazon, where vulnerable indigenous communities have limited healthcare access. Low-density infections often go undetected, hindering elimination. Conventional molecular tests are accurate but costly and impractical for remote areas. UNTRM, the local public university in the Amazonas region, aims to develop an portable, solar-powered system for molecular malaria detection, real-time case notification, and patient monitoring, to be deployed by public health dependencies and health community workers in hard-to-reach, indigenous communities. This point-of-care test with a digital reporting platform, enables rapid detection, immediate notification to health dependencies, connecting isolated communities with health facilities. By equipping local health workers with user-friendly tools, this initiative strengthens surveillance, accelerates treatment, and supports malaria elimination in Peru.
