Summary
Ecuador faces increasing challenges related to water security, which are exacerbated by climate change and ecosystem degradation. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are proposed as a crucial strategy to improve water availability and access, but their effectiveness and implementation must be rigorously evaluated. This project aims to scientifically and technically evaluate the impact of NBS on water security in rural communities located in the headwaters of the Mayo-Chinchipe basin, a hydrologically sensitive area in the southern Ecuadorian Amazon. The research will use hydrological and socioeconomic modelling methodologies to promote the adoption, replication and scaling up of NBS. Field and laboratory campaigns will be carried out to monitor hydrological indicators. With a comprehensive approach, incorporating a gender perspective, the project will empower women growers in sustainable water management and promoting inclusive decision-making processes.
