Summary

NeoThiopia aims to reduce neonatal mortality in Ethiopia by developing an affordable, locally produced neonatal monitoring system while strengthening biomedical engineering capacity at Jimma University. The project enables early detection of neonatal conditions such as sepsis, birth asphyxia, hypoxia, and hypothermia, improving survival rates through timely intervention. By establishing a biomedical engineering lab, training faculty, and fostering industry partnerships, NeoThiopia ensures sustainable innovation and reduces reliance on costly, unreliable imported devices. The project aligns with Ethiopia’s Health Sector Transformation Plan (HSTP II) and contributes to SDGs 3 and 9, promoting equitable healthcare access and local medical technology development. Through research, education, and clinical validation, NeoThiopia bridges gaps between engineering and healthcare, ensuring long-term impact in neonatal care.
