Summary

The Ecuadorian Daule Peripa dam and its down-stream Daule river, both parts of the Guayas River Basin (GRB), are of utmost importance for the local communities as they directly depend on these water bodies for their drinking water, the cattle’s drinking water and for irrigation. The GRB however struggles with pollution and harmful algae blooms (HABs), caused by an overgrowth of toxic cyanobacteria. Besides local communities, they impact the water utility companies by clogging filters and leading to extra costs for removing the toxins.
Until now, driving factors leading to these HAB are just partly known. It has never been investigated when the algae blooms will actually start to produce toxins, nor what are the drivers. Understanding this whole process is needed for predicting HABs and for formulating action plans.
Therefore, we will determine which cyanobacteria are present in the GRB and which ones create HABs. We will isolate and determine the algae and perform DNA extractions for sequencing. This genetic characterisation is needed for enabling environmental DNA (eDNA)-based monitorings of water samples using biotechnological techniques.
HABs will be induced in the lab by changing specific parameters. Impact of climate change will be tested as well. Together with the analysis of historical and new aquatic physicochemical data, drivers leading to HABs will be determined.
Also, the treating effects of e.g., water hyacinths in natural environments will be checked. Together with HOGENT students, optimal valorisation pathways will be determined. Through circular economy, this natural biomass that needs to be regularly harvested, will become a resource.
Mitigation will be done through social media, workshops, an academic event, an informative folder and the creation of a booklet for children.
Based on all insights, we will formulate management actions preventing the HABs, creating better water quality and better health for all (One Health Theory).
