Summary
The seafood processing industry in the Philippines, deeply embedded in the country’s archipelagic cultural heritage, plays a crucial role in nutrition and economic livelihoods, particularly for women in production and marketing. However, the sector faces critical challenges, including environmental threats (e.g., declining fish stocks), economic disruptions (e.g., supply chain vulnerabilities), and evolving regulatory constraints, highlighting the need for sustainable interventions.
This project aims to enhance the sustainability of the Philippine seafood processing industry, specifically bagoong production, through a systematic sustainability assessment and academic capacity-building. It will identify key environmental hotspots, economic risks, and social impacts affecting workers and communities. Additionally, the project will strengthen the research capabilities of local universities by providing targeted training, industry toolkits, and mentorship for graduate students, fostering long-term expertise in sustainability assessments.
