The REMEASURE project brings together a multi-institutional and multi-sectoral partnership to tackle the overuse of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in children. Despite only 5% of children suffering from (chronic) acid reflux, recent reports show a staggering overuse, which is associated with multiple adverse effects. Furthermore, PPI metabolites enter and persist in aquatic environments, causing environmental risks to fish wildlife. By bringing together VUB EFAR and UWC’s expertise on clinical pharmacy and environmental safety, we want to rationalize prescription practices by developing and implementing a newly developed guideline. As such, in the short run, REMEASURE will generate relief for children being overprescribed PPIs (SDG3 – Good Health and Wellbeing). In the long run, the project holds potential of contributing to evidence-based policy-making (SDG12 – Responsible Consumption and Production), and the reduction of pharmaceutical waste (SDG13 – Climate Action).
