General objective

Contribute to reducing the burden of neglected tropical diseases through a One Health approach, and establishing solid systems to contain antimicrobial resistance, emerging infections and other national health risks in Ethiopia.

Summary

This programme aims to address a series of critical knowledge gaps, including on the immunological and parasitological factors that drive transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis, and on the occurrence, drivers and transmission of zoonotic neglected tropical diseases (rabies, cystic echinococcosis and fascioliasis). Research on these neglected tropical diseases aims to inform clinical management guidelines and other prevention and control strategies.

In addition, the programme aims to improve surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and to better characterise the etiology of acute febrile illness. The University of Gondar acts as a hub for leismaniasis research in the north of the country, whereas Jimma University is the hub for zoonotic diseases in the south. Both universities collaborate closely with  two national research institutes in the capital, that help align the programme activities with national priorities and translate findings into national strategies.
