Summary
Smallholder farmers in Western Kenya face major challenges due to a lack of structured bookkeeping, limiting their ability to manage resources efficiently, access credit, and make informed decisions. This project, a collaboration between KU Leuven, the University of Eldoret, and the NGO PlusFarm, will assess the impact of PlusFarm’s existing bookkeeping tool in Bungoma County, refine it, and tailor it for use in a new region (Homa Bay County). In parallel, 500 farmers will receive training in financial literacy and recordkeeping, strengthening their economic resilience. Additionally, an international field course will provide MSc students with hands-on experience in socioeconomic data collection and analysis. By integrating research, farmer training, and education, this initiative will improve farm management, support evidence-based policymaking, and help smallholders build more sustainable and resilient farming systems.
