Summary

SUMBIO responds to Ecuador’s urgent need for sustainable, climate-resilient urban development by creating a modular building prototype using bio-sourced materials. Rapid urbanization and environmental degradation require innovative, low-carbon and affordable construction solutions rooted in circular economy principles. By integrating natural materials and promoting innovation in its production systems, SUMBIO develops scalable building systems adaptable to diverse geographical and socioeconomic contexts. The project promotes collaboration between universities, industry professionals and local (indigenous) communities, thus strengthening expertise and skills in sustainable construction practices on the long term through a.o. training programs, workshops and seminars. As a result, the project enhances economic resilience while advancing inclusive development, climate adaptation and circular resource use in Ecuador and beyond.
