Summary

Fluorosis is a global health issue, affecting parts of Ethiopia, including the Rift Valley. While less prevalent in Tigrai, cases of mottled teeth indicate excessive fluoride in drinking water. This project aims to develop affordable, locally sourced water treatment technologies to reduce fluoride contamination and protect community health.
Leveraging insights from a VLIR-UOS-supported PhD program, we will assess potable water quality in Tigrai, focusing on fluoride levels and their health impacts in Semema district. Cost-effective purification systems will be designed to meet WHO’s safe water standards. Additionally, we will introduce eco-friendly defluoridation units and provide training on water management and filtration system maintenance. By promoting sustainable solutions, this initiative will empower communities to access safe drinking water and mitigate the effects of fluorosis.
