Summary

The destruction and human rights violations in Gaza have a strong impact on mental health (MH) for a large number of Palestinian individuals and their communities. With a lack of coordinated MH care in Gaza, this proposal aims to address this public health urgency through strengthening the partner institution Gaza University in academic, clinical, and policy-supporting capacity. First, a collaborative study on community-based MH care design aims at supporting research capacity in evidence-based MH care and leads to the inclusion of an academic training module in an existing master program, supporting the transfer of clinical skills to future professionals. Second, the collaborative study results in a multi-stakeholder partnership of academic partners, local MH care providers, and international organizations, who build on the collaborative study’s results to generate a long-term policy-supporting consortium for the future development of a coordinated MH care system in Gaza.
